Brats - partial discography (1979-1981)

Pre-Mercyful Fate group Brats (which spawned the dual-guitar team of Fate's Hank Shermann and Michael Denner) were originally a Glam-Punk outfit blending T. Rex, Sweet, and NWOBHM stylings with flat-out Punk, sounding like a more melodic version of The Dead Boys. For the sake of simplicity, this incarnation can be associated with bassist/frontman Yenz (Geisha, Zoser Mez, Lacrimosa, Iron Savior, Stormwarrior), and the band that set the foundation for Mercyful Fate can be associated with the entry of King Diamond (who woulda guessed it?).

Brats released one LP ("1980") on CBS Holland, and two singles. "1980" didn't sell well so CBS dropped them. But "1980" was truly a classic Punk album, and NWOBHM fans should enjoy it as well! King Diamond replaced Yenz on vocals in 1981, after the folding of King's notorious and extremely theatrical group Black Rose. Yenz remained on bass and Carsten Van Der Volsing came in to replace Denner, who left after the "1980" record's release. At this point Brats' style changed completely to the style Mercyful Fate were known for, and the groundwork for this classic Heavy Metal band was formed. A number of the tracks on their rough 1981 rehearsal demo were antecedents to classic Fate tracks.

So here is the album "1980", the 2008 release "The Lost Tapes" (Brats' unreleased, pre-"1980" album which was stashed away for 29 years), the January 18th 1981 rehearsal demo with King Diamond, and the Vilespace release of Brats material from the Brats Myspace fan site, and the Mercyful Fate - The Rare Ones Myspace fan site. Said Myspace sites can be found here and here. The only track unique to this release apart from the others posted is "Some Day" from the 1981 demo with King Diamond. They are good copies recorded with professional software, however.

The only material missing from this post is the "B-Brains/Vivian Wants To Dance" single (1980, CBS Holland), and the Brats/Tyrantz split single, which appears to be the same single as the former with a song added by Tyrantz. Any copy of "18th January 1981 demo" with "You Asked For It" is including it erroneously as it is from the first Mercyful Fate demo tape, and may not even include it at all despite it being listed. It can be found on the "Return Of The Vampire" official compilation of early, rare Mercyful Fate recordings.

  9. You may want to recant your comment about "You Asked For It" being erroneously included on the Part 2... It is clearly a different version. The drumbeat is enough indication of the difference, not to mention a couple of other details. It ISN'T the same version that was on the Mercyful Fate demo, later on the "Return of the Vampire" comp.
