Thunderhead enjoyed a period of notoriety by employing American ex-Thrills vocalist Ted Bullet in a group that also included ex-Viva guitarist Henny Wolter and former Talon bassist Ole Hempleman. Hailing from Connecticut, Bullit originally was originally due to join Victory, but after just one gig opted for Thunderhead. The band initially borrowed Victory's drummer for live work prior to enlisting Alex Scotti and toured Europe as support to Victory and Uriah Heep in 1989. Thunderhead later guested for Motorhead in Britain.
Between 1988 and 1991 Thunderhead released three albums ('Behind The Eight-Ball', 'Busted At The Border'- which included a cover of Chicago's 'No, 25 Or 6 To 5' and 'Crime Pays'). The debut sold more than 30.000 copies.
Parting company with Intercord in 1993 the group signed to G.U.N. Records for that year's 'Killing With Style', which was also released in America.
Choosing to go with a live album for 1994 (recorded in Hannover on 16th January) with 'Classic Killers Live' (including a version of Motorhead's 'Ace Of Spades'). The record was produced by former Michael Schenker Group guitarist Steve Mann.
THUNDERHEAD's next studio album hit the stores during 1995 titled 'Were You Told The Truth About Hell?' and found the band covering Black Sabbath's 'Zero The Hero'. The new album was produced in the band's own Pig Hoese Studio, but was strangely followed with 'The Ballads '88 - '95', a collection of Thunderhead's softer moments plus covers of tracks by Led Zeppelin and Nightranger.
The fast living, fast talking Ted Bullet eventually joined Son Of A Bitch in 1996, the act formed by ex-Saxon members Graham Oliver, Steve Dawson and Pete Gill. In early 1998 the band was found laying claim to the Saxon moniker and playing gigs in Europe billed as such. Thunderhead deciding to continue despite the loss of Bullet, a 'Best Of...' compilation appeared in Japan during 1997 featuring some unreleased material.
Thunderhead emerged back on the scene with a new album 'Ugly Side' and a European support tour to Metal Church throughout October and November of 1999. The band had now evolved into an all American concern comprising of Bullet, former Joined Forces and Geezer guitarist Jimi Bell, Joined Forces bassist Mark Franco and ex-Yngwie Malmsteen, MVP drummer B.J. Zampa.
In September 2000 Bell and Zampa joined David Wayne of Metal Church's breakaway Wayne studio project. Hempelman teamed up with the erstwhile Fair Warning trio of guitarist Helge Engelke, keyboard player Thorsten Laderwald and drummer C.C. Behrens for the Melodic Rock outfit Dreamtide. Hempelman also busied himself working with Hannover Punk Rock bands Cunt, Wurstbruch and Amoc. By early 2004 ex-guitarist JIMI BELL would be collaborating with the Obsession and Loudness credited singer Michael Vescara for a MVP project album and subsequently hooked up with Bird Of Prey.
Thunderhead, in a fashion, reunited in Summer of 2003. Guitarist Henny Wolter and bassist Ole Hempleman, along with new drummer Curt 'Donner' Doernberg of Triebhaus and Amoc repute, forged Donnerkopf, a German transalation of "Thunderhead". This unit, employing German language lyrics, debuted with the 'Krachmaschine' album.
In January 2006 the Thunderhead duo of guitarist Jimi Bell and drummer B.J. Zampa joined celebrated melodic Rock band House Of Lords.
