Ottawa, Canada, 1986 - out of the ashes of three bands, Annihilator, Blackwitch, and Evil Sinner, Ligeia was born. Vocalist John Bates and bassist Dave Scott had co-written much of Annihilator's core repertoire (whether credited or not), Blackwitch had received label interest from Roadrunner Records, and Evil Sinner was a fledgling Metal band featuring Graham MacSkimming (myself) on drums. So I was the baby of the band at 16, the other guys were in their twenties. As a way to ensure these Ottawa Metal Gods kept me in the band, I embarked on a thorough search for the perfect band name - realizing Edgar Allan Poe would be the ultimate source, I pored through a hardcover edition of his complete works, settling on the name Ligeia. Our first 4-song demo was recorded in November 1986 at a studio in Orleans, Ontario. The studio owner had also recorded and shopped Blackwitch to Roadrunner, and offered us a contract confirming plans to secure a record deal, as the demo generated label interest. Labels wanted to hear additional material, so the contract involved recording another demo at no expense to the band for this purpose. I'll be doing remastering/restoration work on this demo tape in the future as well, once I have the time and money for additional equipment. When engineering results that do this music at least a little justice can be achieved, the demos and possibly additional recordings will be released on CD.
